Certain small mammal species are particularly predisposed to developing hyperglycemia due to their unique metabolic characteristics. Degus are exceptionally susceptible because they evolved in an environment with very little dietary sugar and lack the physiological capacity to properly metabolize glucose. Chinese hamsters and dwarf hamsters, particularly Campbell's dwarf hamsters, also demonstrate high rates of diabetes and associated hyperglycemia. Ferrets can develop hyperglycemia secondary to adrenal disease or stress, though they more commonly experience the opposite condition of hypoglycemia from insulinoma.
The impact of persistent hyperglycemia on small mammal health is substantial and progressive. Chronically elevated blood sugar damages blood vessels, nerves, and organs throughout the body, leading to complications including cataracts, peripheral neuropathy, kidney damage, and impaired wound healing. Small mammals with uncontrolled hyperglycemia typically experience increased thirst, excessive urination, weight loss despite increased appetite, and progressive weakness that significantly diminishes their quality of life.
Early detection and appropriate management of hyperglycemia are essential for maintaining the health and longevity of affected small mammals. Because these animals are prey species that instinctively hide signs of illness, owners must be vigilant for subtle changes in behavior, appetite, and elimination patterns. Treatment requires working with an exotic veterinarian experienced in small mammal medicine, as the approach to managing hyperglycemia varies significantly by species and requires careful monitoring to avoid dangerous fluctuations in blood glucose levels.
