This limited thermoregulatory capacity means chinchillas can develop life-threatening hyperthermia at temperatures that feel merely comfortable to humans.
Heat stroke occurs when a chinchilla's body temperature rises beyond its ability to compensate, typically at environmental temperatures above 75 degrees Fahrenheit and especially dangerous above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. As body temperature increases, cellular damage begins occurring throughout vital organs including the brain, heart, kidneys, and liver. The damage cascades rapidly once it begins, with organ failure and death occurring within hours in severe cases. Even chinchillas who survive heat stroke may suffer permanent organ damage affecting their long-term health and lifespan.
The critical nature of heat stroke in chinchillas cannot be overstated, as this condition progresses from early warning signs to fatal outcome faster than almost any other chinchilla health emergency. Prevention through appropriate environmental temperature control is absolutely essential for all chinchillas, particularly during summer months or in warm climates.
