Arthritis and decreased mobility may develop independently of tumors but can make it more difficult for affected hamsters to access food and water or escape discomfort from tumor-related symptoms.

Several conditions can present with symptoms similar to tumors, requiring careful diagnostic evaluation to distinguish between them. Abscesses, which are localized pockets of infection, can form lumps beneath the skin that may initially be mistaken for tumors, though abscesses often develop more rapidly, may be warmer to the touch, and can sometimes be drained. Cysts and other non-neoplastic masses occasionally develop in hamsters and may be distinguished through fine needle aspiration or biopsy. Enlarged lymph nodes from infection may mimic lymphoma presentation, requiring diagnostic testing to differentiate infectious from neoplastic causes. Generalized illness from metabolic disease, infection, or organ failure may present with weight loss, lethargy, and decreased appetite similar to cancer-related decline.

Secondary complications of tumors in hamsters include infection when tumors ulcerate and break through the skin surface, potentially leading to abscessation or systemic bacterial spread. Hemorrhage from fragile tumor tissue can cause acute blood loss and weakness. Large tumors may physically obstruct normal eating, breathing, elimination, or movement depending on their location. Paraneoplastic syndromes, in which tumors produce hormones or other substances affecting distant body systems, can cause metabolic derangements and organ dysfunction beyond the direct effects of the tumor mass. Metastatic spread of malignant tumors to lungs, liver, and other organs leads to multi-organ dysfunction and progressive deterioration. Understanding these potential complications helps owners and veterinarians anticipate problems and provide appropriate supportive care.
