Proliferative ileitis, commonly known as wet tail, is one of the most serious and frequently fatal diseases affecting pet hamsters. This severe intestinal infection primarily targets the ileum, which is the final section of the small intestine, causing intense inflammation and a characteristic wet, soiled appearance around the hamster's tail and hindquarters. The disease progresses with alarming speed, and a hamster that appears only mildly unwell in the morning can be critically ill or deceased by evening, making immediate veterinary intervention absolutely essential for any chance of survival.
Wet tail predominantly affects young hamsters between three and eight weeks of age, which unfortunately coincides with the typical age at which hamsters are weaned and sold in pet stores. Syrian hamsters, also known as golden hamsters, are particularly susceptible to this condition, although dwarf hamster species can also develop the disease under stressful conditions. The stress of weaning, transport, rehoming, and adaptation to a new environment creates the perfect storm for the causative bacteria to overwhelm the hamster's immature immune system, which explains why so many new pet hamsters succumb to this devastating illness within days of arriving at their new homes.
The impact of proliferative ileitis on a hamster's health is catastrophic and multisystemic. The severe diarrhea leads to rapid and profound dehydration, electrolyte imbalances that affect heart and muscle function, and dangerous drops in blood sugar levels. The intestinal damage prevents nutrient absorption, causing rapid weight loss and weakness. Secondary bacterial infections can develop, and in severe cases, the intestinal wall can become so damaged that it perforates, leading to peritonitis and sepsis. The combination of dehydration, malnutrition, infection, and systemic toxicity creates a cascade of organ failure that claims the lives of many affected hamsters within 24 to 72 hours of symptom onset.
Despite its severity, wet tail can be successfully treated if caught in the earliest stages and managed aggressively with appropriate veterinary care. Treatment requires a combination of antibiotics effective against the causative bacteria, intensive fluid therapy to combat dehydration, nutritional support, and careful temperature management. However, owners must understand that even with optimal treatment, survival rates remain modest, and prevention through proper husbandry and stress reduction is far preferable to attempting to treat an established infection. Any hamster showing signs of wet tail requires immediate evaluation by a veterinarian experienced in small mammal medicine, as delays of even a few hours can mean the difference between life and death.
