Fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic lipidosis, is a metabolic condition in which excessive fat accumulates within liver cells, impairing the organ's ability to perform its essential functions. The liver plays a critical role in metabolism, detoxification, protein synthesis, and numerous other vital processes, and when liver cells become engorged with fat, these functions deteriorate progressively. In small mammals, fatty liver disease represents one of the most significant hepatic conditions encountered in veterinary practice, affecting multiple species with varying presentations and prognoses.
This condition affects a wide range of small mammal species, with hamsters and hedgehogs being particularly susceptible. Syrian hamsters commonly develop fatty liver disease, often in association with obesity, diabetes, or anorexia. Hedgehogs are highly prone to this condition due to their tendency toward obesity in captivity and their unique metabolic characteristics. Guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, ferrets, and sugar gliders can all develop hepatic lipidosis under appropriate circumstances, though prevalence varies by species. Female small mammals, particularly those that are pregnant, nursing, or experiencing reproductive complications, face elevated risk.
The impact on health ranges from subclinical fat accumulation detected incidentally to fulminant liver failure and death. In early stages, affected animals may show no obvious symptoms while liver function gradually declines. As the condition progresses, metabolic dysfunction becomes apparent through weight changes, appetite alterations, and lethargy. Advanced fatty liver disease causes jaundice, coagulopathies, hepatic encephalopathy, and multiple organ failure. Small mammals' high metabolic rates mean that hepatic dysfunction has rapid and severe consequences, and the condition can progress from apparently healthy to critically ill within days to weeks.
Fatty liver disease is treatable, particularly when detected early before irreversible liver damage has occurred. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause, whether that is obesity, anorexia, inappropriate diet, or another primary condition. Nutritional support, particularly ensuring adequate protein and caloric intake, is essential for recovery. Supportive care helps the liver regenerate while medical management addresses complications. However, advanced cases with severe hepatic dysfunction carry guarded to poor prognoses. Prevention through appropriate diet, weight management, and prompt treatment of anorexia is far more effective than treating established disease.
