This condition predominantly affects intact female ferrets due to their unique reproductive physiology. Unlike most mammals, female ferrets are induced ovulators, meaning they require mating to trigger ovulation. Without breeding or artificial intervention, a female ferret can remain in estrus indefinitely, continuously producing dangerously high levels of estrogen. While ferrets are the most commonly affected species, estrogen toxicity can also occur in other small mammals exposed to exogenous estrogen sources or those with estrogen-producing tumors, including rabbits with ovarian cysts and guinea pigs with cystic ovaries.
The impact of estrogen toxicity on health is profound and multi-systemic. Estrogen suppresses bone marrow function, reducing production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This results in severe anemia causing weakness and organ damage, immunosuppression increasing infection risk, and bleeding disorders from inadequate platelet numbers.
