This condition occurs when bacteria or other infectious organisms circulating in the bloodstream colonize damaged or abnormal areas of the heart's endocardium, forming infectious growths called vegetations. In small mammals, endocarditis is a life-threatening condition that requires prompt diagnosis and aggressive treatment for any chance of successful outcome.
While endocarditis is not among the most commonly diagnosed cardiac conditions in small mammals, it can affect any species when the circumstances allow bacterial seeding of the heart. The condition typically develops as a complication of untreated bacterial infections elsewhere in the body, dental disease with oral bacteria entering the bloodstream, or wounds that allow bacterial entry. Animals with pre-existing heart disease or compromised immune systems may be at increased risk.
The impact of endocarditis on affected animals is severe and often rapidly progressive. The infectious vegetations that form on heart valves interfere with normal valve function, causing regurgitation of blood and reducing cardiac efficiency. Pieces of vegetation can break off and travel through the bloodstream to cause infections or blockages in distant organs. Systemic effects of ongoing infection compound the cardiac damage, leading to rapid deterioration in many cases.
Treatment of endocarditis in small mammals is challenging and success is not guaranteed. Prolonged courses of appropriate antibiotics are required to eradicate infection from the relatively protected environment of the heart. Supportive care addresses cardiac dysfunction and systemic illness. Even with treatment, the structural damage to heart valves may be permanent, leading to ongoing cardiac problems.
