Eclampsia, also known as hypocalcemia, milk fever, or puerperal tetany, is a life-threatening metabolic emergency that occurs when blood calcium levels drop dangerously low in late-pregnant or nursing small mammals. This condition develops when the body's calcium reserves become depleted, typically due to the high calcium demands of fetal bone development during late pregnancy or milk production during lactation. Without immediate treatment, eclampsia rapidly progresses to severe muscle tremors, seizures, coma, and death.
This condition affects nursing and late-pregnant females of virtually all small mammal species, though guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, and rats are among those most commonly affected. The condition is particularly dangerous in small mammals because of their high metabolic rates and the relatively large calcium demands of pregnancy and lactation relative to their body size. Guinea pigs face additional risk because they cannot synthesize vitamin D efficiently without adequate ultraviolet light exposure, which affects calcium metabolism.
The impact of eclampsia on affected animals is severe and rapidly progressive. As blood calcium falls below critical levels, normal muscle and nerve function becomes impossible. Early symptoms of weakness and incoordination quickly progress to severe muscle tremors, rigidity, and seizures. Body temperature may rise dangerously due to excessive muscle activity. Without treatment, respiratory failure and cardiac arrest occur within hours of symptom onset. Even with treatment, severely affected animals may suffer permanent damage or die.
The good news is that eclampsia is both preventable and treatable when recognized and addressed promptly. Prevention through proper nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, appropriate dietary calcium and vitamin D supplementation, and careful management of litter size can dramatically reduce the risk of this condition. When eclampsia does occur, immediate veterinary treatment with intravenous calcium supplementation can be life-saving if initiated before irreversible damage occurs. All owners of pregnant or nursing small mammals should be aware of the signs of eclampsia and prepared to seek emergency veterinary care immediately if symptoms develop.
