Hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, and ferrets can all develop ringworm infections. The fungi responsible most commonly belong to the genera Trichophyton and Microsporum, with Trichophyton mentagrophytes being particularly prevalent in small mammals.
The impact of dermatophytosis on small mammal health is typically more cosmetic than life-threatening, causing hair loss, skin irritation, and discomfort rather than systemic illness. However, the condition significantly affects quality of life through itching and skin inflammation. Secondary bacterial infections can develop in damaged skin, potentially causing more serious complications. Perhaps most importantly, the zoonotic nature of dermatophytosis means infected pets pose a real health risk to their human families, making prompt diagnosis and treatment important for household health as well as animal welfare.
Dermatophytosis is treatable with appropriate antifungal medications, though complete resolution may take several weeks to months of consistent therapy. Environmental decontamination is essential to prevent reinfection and transmission to other animals or humans in the household. Early detection and treatment shorten the course of disease and reduce transmission risk. Any small mammal with suspicious skin lesions should be evaluated by a veterinarian experienced in exotic animal medicine, both for the pet's wellbeing and to protect human family members from potential infection.
