Cryptorchidism occurs across various small mammal species, including ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, rats, and other rodents. The prevalence varies significantly between species and even between different breeds or lines within a species, reflecting the genetic nature of this condition. In ferrets, cryptorchidism is relatively common and well-documented due to their popularity as pets and the standard practice of neutering. Some species naturally have testicles that are more mobile or seasonally descend and retract, which must be distinguished from true cryptorchidism.
The health impact of cryptorchidism extends beyond simple anatomical abnormality. Retained testicles are maintained at body temperature rather than the cooler scrotal temperature that sperm production requires, typically resulting in infertility from the affected testicle. More significantly, retained testicles have a markedly increased risk of developing cancer, particularly Sertoli cell tumors and seminomas. The retained testicle may also be prone to torsion, where it twists on its blood supply, causing acute and severe pain requiring emergency intervention. Additionally, retained testicles continue to produce hormones, contributing to male behavioral patterns.
Cryptorchidism is treatable through surgical removal of the retained testicle or testicles, a procedure that requires expertise in small mammal surgery. Early detection and treatment are recommended to prevent the development of testicular cancer and other complications. Because cryptorchidism has a genetic component, affected animals should not be bred even if they are unilaterally affected and technically fertile. Owners acquiring male small mammals should be aware of this condition and have new pets examined by an exotic veterinarian to ensure normal testicular descent has occurred.
