Contact dermatitis can affect any small mammal species kept as pets, though the likelihood and severity vary based on species sensitivity, husbandry practices, and exposure duration. Guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, rats, mice, gerbils, chinchillas, hedgehogs, and ferrets can all develop this condition when exposed to inappropriate bedding materials, cleaning products, topical treatments, or other environmental irritants. The prevalence is difficult to quantify but is considered common in small mammal practice, particularly when owners use cedar or untreated pine bedding, harsh cleaning chemicals, or inappropriate grooming products.
The impact of contact dermatitis on affected animals extends beyond simple skin discomfort. Persistent irritation leads to scratching and self-trauma, which can break the skin barrier and allow secondary bacterial or fungal infections to develop. Chronic inflammation causes stress that affects overall health and immune function.
