Ferrets with dilated cardiomyopathy or valvular disease frequently develop heart failure symptoms. Chinchillas, guinea pigs, and other small mammals can also develop congestive heart failure when underlying cardiac conditions advance sufficiently.
The impact of congestive heart failure on affected animals is severe and progressive. As fluid accumulates in the lungs, breathing becomes increasingly labored and oxygen exchange is impaired. Animals may show profound weakness, complete exercise intolerance, and significant decline in quality of life. Without treatment, congestive heart failure is typically fatal within days to weeks. While congestive heart failure cannot be cured because the underlying cardiac damage cannot be reversed, appropriate treatment can significantly improve comfort and may extend survival time.
