These conditions affect all species of small mammals, though the true prevalence is difficult to establish due to limited cardiac screening in these animals and the tendency for severely affected individuals to die shortly after birth. Animals with significant congenital heart defects may fail to thrive as juveniles or develop heart failure symptoms as they mature.

Small defects may cause no clinical problems and only be detected incidentally during examination for other purposes. Larger or more complex defects can significantly impair circulation, leading to inadequate oxygen delivery, exercise intolerance, stunted growth, and reduced lifespan. Some defects predispose to secondary complications including heart failure, arrhythmias, and infection of heart structures.
Treatment options for congenital heart defects in small mammals are limited compared to larger species, as surgical correction is generally not feasible given the tiny size of these animals. Management therefore focuses on supportive care, treatment of complications as they develop, and quality of life maintenance. Early detection through veterinary examination allows for appropriate monitoring and planning, even when curative treatment is not possible.
