Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by single-celled protozoan organisms belonging to the genus Eimeria and related genera. These microscopic parasites infect the intestinal tract and, in some species, the liver, causing damage that ranges from mild and self-limiting to severe and potentially fatal. Coccidia are highly host-specific, meaning that different species of these parasites have evolved to infect specific animal hosts, and most cannot be transmitted between different animal species. The parasites reproduce within the cells lining the intestinal tract, causing cellular destruction and inflammation that interferes with nutrient absorption and normal digestive function.
Coccidiosis affects virtually all species of small mammals kept as pets, though the specific Eimeria species involved varies depending on the host animal. Rabbits are particularly susceptible and may be affected by intestinal coccidia or the more serious hepatic form that attacks the liver. Guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, rats, and mice all have their own species-specific coccidia that can cause disease under appropriate conditions. The condition is extremely common, with most small mammal populations harboring coccidia to some degree, though clinical disease typically develops only when parasite numbers become overwhelming or when host immunity is compromised.
The impact of coccidiosis on affected animals varies tremendously based on the parasite load, the species and strain of coccidia involved, the age and immune status of the host, and environmental factors. Mild infections may cause no noticeable symptoms, while moderate cases produce diarrhea, reduced appetite, and weight loss. Severe infections, particularly in young animals or those with compromised immunity, can result in life-threatening dehydration, secondary bacterial infections, and death. Hepatic coccidiosis in rabbits can cause severe liver damage with potentially fatal consequences even in adult animals.
Treatability of coccidiosis is generally good when the condition is recognized early and appropriate treatment is initiated. Antiprotozoal medications, particularly sulfa-based drugs, are effective against most coccidia species affecting small mammals. However, treatment success depends on concurrent management of environmental contamination, as coccidia produce highly resistant oocysts that can persist in the environment for extended periods. Prevention through good husbandry practices is essential, and veterinary care from practitioners experienced in exotic small mammal medicine ensures proper diagnosis and species-appropriate treatment protocols.
