Gastrointestinal candidiasis can disrupt normal digestion and nutrient absorption, leading to weight loss and malnutrition. In severe cases, the infection can become systemic, spreading through the bloodstream to affect vital organs including the kidneys, liver, and brain, which constitutes a life-threatening emergency.
With prompt diagnosis and appropriate antifungal treatment, candidiasis is generally treatable in small mammals, though the prognosis depends heavily on the underlying cause of immunosuppression and the extent of infection at the time of diagnosis. Early detection is crucial because small mammals can decline rapidly due to their high metabolic rates and small body size. Owners should seek care from a veterinarian experienced in exotic small mammal medicine, as treatment protocols and medication dosing differ significantly from those used in dogs and cats. The key to successful management lies in identifying and addressing the underlying factors that allowed the yeast overgrowth to occur in the first place.
