This gram-negative bacterium is the same organism responsible for kennel cough in dogs and contributes to respiratory disease in cats, making cross-species transmission a significant concern in multi-pet households. In small mammals, particularly guinea pigs, Bordetella infections can range from mild upper respiratory symptoms to severe, life-threatening pneumonia.
Guinea pigs are exceptionally susceptible to Bordetella bronchiseptica infection, with this bacterium being one of the primary causes of respiratory disease in this species. The bacteria can cause sudden death in guinea pigs, even before obvious symptoms develop, making this a particularly concerning pathogen for guinea pig owners. Other small mammals including rabbits, rats, mice, hamsters, and hedgehogs can also be affected, though typically with less severe disease than guinea pigs experience.
