Aspergillosis is a fungal infection caused by various species of Aspergillus, a mold found ubiquitously in the environment worldwide. In small mammals, this opportunistic pathogen primarily affects the respiratory system, causing disease ranging from localized nasal or sinus infections to invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and potentially disseminated systemic infection. Unlike bacterial respiratory infections that are common across all small mammal species, aspergillosis is relatively uncommon and typically occurs in animals with compromised immune systems or following exposure to unusually high fungal loads. Understanding this condition is important for owners and veterinarians because it requires different diagnostic and treatment approaches than more common bacterial infections.
Aspergillosis can affect any species of small mammal, but certain species and situations carry higher risk. Hedgehogs appear particularly susceptible, possibly due to immune system characteristics or environmental exposure patterns. Sugar gliders and other species prone to immune suppression from stress or nutritional deficiencies may develop aspergillosis. Ferrets with concurrent diseases affecting immune function are at elevated risk. Animals receiving immunosuppressive medications for other conditions become more vulnerable. Generally, aspergillosis should be suspected when respiratory symptoms fail to respond to standard antibacterial treatment, particularly in immunocompromised patients.
The impact of aspergillosis on affected small mammals can be severe, as fungal infections are inherently more challenging to treat than bacterial infections. The clinical course may be prolonged, with gradual deterioration despite treatment in some cases. Invasive aspergillosis, where the fungus invades blood vessels and spreads to other organs, carries a particularly poor prognosis. Even localized respiratory aspergillosis often requires weeks to months of antifungal therapy for resolution. The nonspecific initial symptoms may lead to delayed diagnosis, during which time the infection establishes itself more firmly.
Treatment of aspergillosis in small mammals is possible but requires accurate diagnosis and aggressive antifungal therapy under the guidance of a veterinarian experienced in exotic animal medicine. Antifungal medications effective against Aspergillus species include itraconazole, voriconazole, and amphotericin B, though not all are appropriate for all species due to toxicity concerns. Treatment duration is typically prolonged, often two to four months or longer. Supportive care including nutritional support and treatment of secondary bacterial infections is important. The prognosis depends on the extent of infection, the underlying cause of any immune compromise, and the response to antifungal therapy.
