Aspergillosis is an opportunistic fungal infection caused by species of Aspergillus, most commonly Aspergillus fumigatus, affecting small mammals and numerous other animal species. This ubiquitous environmental fungus produces spores that are constantly present in the air, making exposure virtually unavoidable. In healthy animals with competent immune systems, inhaled spores are cleared effectively without causing disease. However, when immune defenses are compromised or when animals are exposed to exceptionally high spore concentrations, Aspergillus can establish infection with serious and potentially fatal consequences.
While aspergillosis can theoretically affect any small mammal species, certain groups appear more vulnerable in clinical practice. Guinea pigs with underlying health conditions or nutritional deficiencies, particularly vitamin C deficiency which is common in this species, show increased susceptibility. Chinchillas housed in environments with poor ventilation or moldy conditions may develop infection. Hedgehogs, which face numerous health challenges in captivity, occasionally develop aspergillosis. Any small mammal receiving immunosuppressive treatment, experiencing chronic illness, or facing severe stress may be at elevated risk for this opportunistic infection.
The impact of aspergillosis on small mammal health varies from localized nasal or respiratory infection to devastating systemic disease. Respiratory involvement produces progressive pneumonia that interferes with oxygenation and causes increasing respiratory distress. Systemic spread, known as disseminated aspergillosis, seeds fungal infection to multiple organs including brain, kidneys, liver, and other tissues, carrying grave prognosis. The small body size and high metabolic rate of affected animals means disease can progress rapidly, and the tendency to hide illness delays recognition until advanced stages.
Treatability of aspergillosis in small mammals is possible but challenging. Antifungal medications effective against Aspergillus species exist, but treatment requires prolonged courses lasting weeks to months, and penetration to infection sites may be limited. The underlying immunocompromise that permitted infection often persists and may prevent adequate host response to complement medical therapy. Early detection substantially improves outcomes, but the nonspecific nature of early symptoms makes early diagnosis difficult. Consultation with an exotic animal veterinarian experienced in fungal diseases provides the best chance for successful management.
