Anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity occurs when small mammals ingest rat or mouse poison containing chemicals that interfere with blood clotting mechanisms. These rodenticides are designed to kill pest rodents by causing fatal internal bleeding, but they pose equal danger to pet small mammals including guinea pigs, chinchillas, ferrets, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, and ironically, pet rats, mice, hamsters, and gerbils. Exposure can occur through direct consumption of bait, ingestion of poisoned prey or contaminated materials, or even secondary exposure through contact with poisoned wild rodents. The toxicity causes progressive inability to form blood clots, leading to spontaneous bleeding that can be fatal without treatment.
The danger of anticoagulant rodenticides lies in their delayed onset of action and potent effect on the clotting cascade. These poisons work by depleting vitamin K, which is essential for producing several clotting factors in the liver. Symptoms typically do not appear until two to five days after ingestion, by which time significant depletion of clotting factors has occurred. This delay often means owners do not connect symptoms to a poisoning event that happened days earlier, making diagnosis challenging. By the time bleeding symptoms appear, the animal is in critical condition.
Modern second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides including brodifacoum, bromadiolone, and difethialone are particularly dangerous because they are more potent than older first-generation compounds and persist in the body for weeks to months. A single ingestion of these potent poisons can cause prolonged toxicity requiring extended treatment. Even small exposures that might not be fatal in larger animals can be deadly for small mammals with their rapid metabolisms and limited blood volumes. The amount of bait considered safe for placement in a home can contain far more than the lethal dose for a guinea pig or hamster.
Treatment is available and highly effective when initiated promptly, making rapid recognition and veterinary care essential for survival. Vitamin K supplementation restores the ability to produce clotting factors and can save animals even with active bleeding if administered in time. However, treatment must continue for weeks to months depending on the specific rodenticide involved, and relapse occurs if therapy is discontinued too early. Prevention through eliminating access to rodenticides and using alternative pest control methods is the safest approach for households with pet small mammals.
