The disease typically emerges in middle-aged ferrets between three and seven years of age, though cases in younger and older animals do occur. Affected ferrets may experience vulvar swelling in females, prostatic enlargement causing urinary obstruction in males, muscle wasting, lethargy, and increased susceptibility to other illnesses. The hormone imbalances can cause profound disruption to multiple body systems, making this a serious systemic disease rather than simply a skin condition.
Fortunately, adrenal disease is manageable with appropriate veterinary care from an exotic animal practitioner experienced in ferret medicine. Treatment options include medical management with hormone-modulating medications, surgical removal of affected adrenal glands, or combinations of both approaches. While the condition is not curable in the sense of permanent resolution, many ferrets live comfortably for years following diagnosis with appropriate ongoing management. Early recognition and intervention provide the best outcomes, making owner awareness of characteristic early signs particularly valuable.
