Fluid loss through damaged skin can cause dangerous dehydration. Extensive burns may result in permanent scarring, mobility limitations from contracture, or disfigurement. Even successfully healed burns may leave the reptile more vulnerable to future injury or infection in the affected area.
When treated promptly and appropriately, many thermal burns heal successfully, though the process is typically prolonged in reptiles due to their slower metabolism compared to mammals. Treatment requires immediate husbandry correction to prevent further injury, appropriate wound care to prevent infection and promote healing, and supportive measures to maintain the reptile's overall health during recovery. A reptile-experienced veterinarian should evaluate all but the most superficial burns to assess severity, recommend appropriate treatment, and monitor for complications. Prevention through proper heat source selection, placement, and regulation remains far preferable to treating burns after they occur.
