Stomatitis, commonly known as mouth rot, is one of the most frequently encountered and serious infectious conditions affecting captive reptiles. This condition involves bacterial infection of the oral cavity, causing inflammation, tissue destruction, and characteristic caseous (cheese-like) discharge accumulation in the mouth. Stomatitis can range from mild gingivitis to severe necrotizing infection that destroys oral tissues, invades bone, and spreads systemically. Without treatment, advanced stomatitis can be fatal, making this condition one that all reptile keepers should be able to recognize.
Stomatitis affects reptiles across all major groups including lizards, snakes, turtles, tortoises, and crocodilians, earning its status as one of the most common reptile health problems seen by veterinarians. The condition occurs when opportunistic bacteria normally present in the oral cavity or environment overwhelm local defenses and establish active infection. While stomatitis can theoretically occur in any reptile, it develops almost exclusively in animals with compromised immune function, making it primarily a disease of captive reptiles kept under suboptimal conditions.
The impact of stomatitis on reptile health depends greatly on disease severity and stage at diagnosis. Early mild cases may cause minor discomfort and slight appetite reduction. However, progressive disease causes severe pain, complete food refusal, and substantial tissue destruction. Infection can spread from the oral cavity to involve the respiratory tract, enter the bloodstream causing septicemia, or erode into the skull. The characteristic hiding of illness by reptiles means that stomatitis is frequently well-advanced before owners recognize a problem, substantially worsening prognosis.
Stomatitis is treatable, and many cases respond well to appropriate therapy when detected early. However, treatment requires professional veterinary care including proper diagnosis, appropriate antibiotic selection, potential surgical debridement, and comprehensive supportive care. Equally important is correction of the husbandry deficiencies that allowed disease to develop, without which treatment is likely to fail or disease will recur. Prevention through optimal husbandry represents the best approach to this serious but largely avoidable condition.
