Shell necrosis refers to the death and progressive destruction of shell tissue in chelonians, encompassing conditions commonly known as shell rot or ulcerative shell disease. This serious condition involves bacterial, fungal, or mixed infections that destroy the keratin scutes and may penetrate into the underlying bone, causing tissue death that spreads without treatment. Shell necrosis represents one of the most common and potentially devastating shell conditions affecting captive turtles and tortoises, frequently resulting from husbandry deficiencies that create conditions favorable for pathogenic organisms.
Both aquatic and terrestrial chelonians are susceptible to shell necrosis, though the specific pathogens and predisposing factors differ between these groups. Aquatic turtles commonly develop bacterial shell rot secondary to poor water quality, with organisms including Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, and Citrobacter species frequently isolated from lesions. Tortoises may develop shell necrosis from retained moisture, substrate contamination, or wounds that become infected. Fungal involvement, either alone or in combination with bacteria, occurs in both groups and may be particularly difficult to treat.
The impact of shell necrosis on chelonian health ranges from localized tissue damage to life-threatening systemic infection. Early lesions may appear as small discolored areas that seem cosmetically minor but harbor active infection spreading beneath the surface. As necrosis progresses, larger areas of shell tissue die and slough, potentially exposing bone. Bacteria may enter the bloodstream from infected shell, causing septicemia that affects multiple organ systems. The chronic nature of many shell necrosis cases, combined with reptiles' tendency to hide illness, means significant damage often exists by the time obvious symptoms prompt veterinary consultation.
Successful treatment of shell necrosis requires prompt veterinary intervention, aggressive medical and often surgical management, and comprehensive husbandry correction to eliminate the conditions that allowed infection to develop. A reptile-experienced veterinarian should evaluate any chelonian with suspected shell necrosis to determine the extent of involvement, identify the causative organisms, and develop an appropriate treatment plan. With early diagnosis and dedicated treatment, many chelonians with shell necrosis recover successfully, though scarring and permanent shell changes commonly result.
