Poorly mineralized bones cannot support body weight properly, leading to difficulty walking, climbing, and engaging in normal species-typical behaviors. Jaw deformities impair eating ability, potentially creating feeding difficulties that persist even after underlying nutritional deficiencies are corrected. Spinal involvement can compress nerves and internal organs, causing neurological deficits and organ dysfunction. The metabolic disruption underlying rickets also affects muscle function, immune response, and other physiological systems beyond the skeleton.
Early detection and immediate intervention offer the best outcomes for juvenile reptiles developing rickets, as prompt correction of husbandry deficiencies can halt disease progression before permanent deformities develop. However, because reptiles naturally hide signs of illness and rickets develops gradually, obvious symptoms often indicate that significant irreversible damage has already occurred. This reality underscores the absolute importance of proper husbandry from the very beginning of a juvenile reptile's life, ideally starting before the animal even hatches through proper maternal nutrition and egg incubation conditions.
