Paramyxovirus, commonly abbreviated as PMV, represents one of the most significant viral threats affecting reptiles in both captive collections and wild populations. This highly contagious RNA virus belongs to the family Paramyxoviridae and has been documented across a wide range of reptile species, causing severe respiratory and neurological disease that frequently proves fatal. The virus was first identified in snakes during the 1970s and has since been recognized as a major concern for reptile keepers, breeders, and conservation programs worldwide.
Paramyxovirus affects numerous reptile species, though it has been most extensively studied in snakes, where it is sometimes referred to as ophidian paramyxovirus or OPMV. The virus has been documented in vipers, pythons, boas, colubrids, and various other snake families with varying degrees of severity. Beyond snakes, PMV has been identified in lizards including monitors and iguanas, as well as in chelonians such as tortoises and turtles. The prevalence of this virus in captive collections can be significant, particularly in facilities with inadequate quarantine protocols or those that frequently introduce new animals without proper screening.
The impact of paramyxovirus on reptile health is profound and often devastating. The virus primarily attacks the respiratory system, causing severe pneumonia that compromises the animal's ability to breathe effectively. Additionally, many strains of PMV have neurotropic properties, meaning they specifically target nervous tissue and can cause progressive neurological deterioration. Because reptiles are ectothermic and their immune function is temperature-dependent, their ability to mount an effective response against viral infections is inherently limited compared to mammals. This makes viral diseases like PMV particularly dangerous, as the reptile's immune system may struggle to clear the infection even under optimal conditions.
While there is no cure for paramyxovirus and no vaccine currently available for reptiles, early detection and aggressive supportive care can sometimes help affected animals survive. However, the prognosis for reptiles with PMV is generally guarded to poor, and many cases prove fatal despite intensive veterinary intervention.
