The condition demands prompt recognition and aggressive intervention to achieve successful outcomes.
Mucormycosis can affect various reptile species maintained in captivity, though documented cases remain relatively uncommon in the veterinary literature compared to some other fungal pathogens. The infection typically occurs in reptiles with significantly compromised immune systems due to chronic stress, malnutrition, concurrent disease, or severely inadequate husbandry conditions. All reptile groups including lizards, chelonians, crocodilians, and tuatara are potentially susceptible, with individual immune status and environmental conditions being more predictive of disease risk than species identity alone.
The health impact of mucormycosis is substantial due to the aggressive nature of the causative organisms. Mucorales fungi possess characteristics that make them particularly destructive, including rapid growth, production of tissue-degrading enzymes, and ability to invade blood vessels causing tissue infarction. The infection can present as cutaneous disease, respiratory infection, gastrointestinal involvement, or disseminated systemic disease affecting multiple organs.
