Treatability of stomatitis in monitor lizards depends critically on the stage at which treatment begins and the underlying causes that allowed infection to establish. Early cases with superficial involvement respond well to local treatment combined with systemic antibiotics and husbandry correction, often resolving within several weeks with minimal lasting effects. However, because monitors hide illness effectively and because early stomatitis signs can be subtle, many cases progress significantly before detection. Advanced stomatitis involving tissue necrosis, bone infection, or systemic spread requires aggressive treatment including surgical debridement under anesthesia, prolonged antibiotic therapy, and intensive supportive care, with guarded prognosis even with optimal treatment.
