Lighting burns are unfortunately common in captive reptiles, particularly when keepers are unfamiliar with proper light positioning guidelines or when reptiles can climb to reach light sources. The eyes are particularly vulnerable, as UVB radiation can cause photokeratoconjunctivitis, also known as photo-ophthalmia or arc eye, a painful inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva. Skin burns may occur on the back, head, and dorsal surfaces closest to the light source. The combination of inadequate keeper education about UVB safety distances and the wide availability of high-output UVB bulbs has contributed to the prevalence of this condition.
The physiological impact of excessive UVB exposure involves direct damage to cellular DNA and tissue structures. UVB radiation penetrates skin and ocular tissues, causing photochemical reactions that damage cells and trigger inflammation. Eye damage includes corneal and conjunctival injury that causes pain, swelling, and discharge. Skin damage ranges from mild irritation and color changes to severe burns with scale loss and tissue necrosis. Chronic excessive UVB exposure may increase the risk of skin cancer, though this remains less studied in reptiles than in mammals. The severity depends on the intensity of exposure, duration, and the specific tissue affected.
The good news is that lighting burns are entirely preventable through proper light source selection, positioning, and enclosure design, and most cases respond well to treatment once the cause is identified and corrected. Eye injuries, when treated promptly, often heal completely, though severe cases may result in permanent vision impairment. Skin burns typically heal with appropriate wound care and time. Prevention through education about UVB safety distances and proper enclosure design is far preferable to treatment, and understanding this condition helps keepers provide safe, beneficial lighting for their reptiles.
