Cryptosporidiosis, commonly known as stick tail disease in leopard geckos, is a devastating parasitic infection caused by the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium, most commonly Cryptosporidium varanii (formerly C. saurophilum). This disease represents one of the most serious health threats facing captive leopard geckos, causing chronic gastrointestinal damage that leads to progressive wasting and, in most cases, eventual death. The characteristic appearance of an infected gecko with a thin, stick-like tail while the body appears relatively normal gives this condition its colloquial name.
Leopard geckos are particularly susceptible to cryptosporidiosis, with the infection being widespread in captive populations, especially those from commercial breeding operations, pet stores, and imported stock. The parasite infects the gastric mucosa (stomach lining), causing chronic inflammation and thickening that interferes with normal digestion and nutrient absorption. Once established, the infection is virtually impossible to eliminate completely. Studies examining leopard gecko populations have found disturbingly high prevalence rates in some collections, and the hardy nature of the Cryptosporidium oocysts makes the parasite extremely difficult to eradicate from contaminated environments.
The impact of cryptosporidiosis on leopard gecko health is profound and typically progressive. Affected geckos gradually lose weight despite apparently normal or even increased appetite in early stages. As the disease progresses, the tail becomes increasingly thin as fat reserves are depleted while the gastric damage prevents adequate nutrition. Secondary complications including bacterial infections and organ failure eventually develop. The chronic nature of the disease, combined with the absence of a reliable cure, makes cryptosporidiosis one of the most dreaded diagnoses in leopard gecko medicine.
Treatability of cryptosporidiosis is extremely limited, and keepers should understand that this is generally considered a fatal disease, though the timeline from infection to death varies considerably. Some infected geckos may live for months or even years with supportive care, while others decline rapidly. Experimental treatments have shown some promise in reducing parasite shedding and extending survival, but no treatment consistently eliminates the infection. Prevention through strict quarantine, testing of new animals, and rigorous hygiene remains the only effective approach to protecting gecko collections from this devastating disease.
