Animals suffering from heavy parasitic infections often develop intussusception as the irritation and inflammation from parasites triggers abnormal intestinal contractions. Reptiles experiencing enteritis, diarrhea, or other conditions causing hypermotility of the gut are at increased risk. The health impact of intussusception is severe and multisystemic due to the dual mechanisms of intestinal obstruction and vascular compromise. The telescoped segment creates a mechanical blockage that prevents passage of ingesta, leading to proximal intestinal distension, fluid accumulation, and bacterial overgrowth. Perhaps more critically, the invagination traps blood vessels between the intestinal layers, compromising circulation to the affected tissue. This ischemia, or lack of blood flow, leads to rapid tissue death if not corrected. Devitalized intestinal tissue allows bacterial translocation into the bloodstream, potentially causing fatal septicemia. With immediate veterinary intervention, particularly surgical correction, survival rates for reptiles with intussusception can be favorable when treatment is initiated before significant tissue necrosis has occurred. However, the prognosis becomes increasingly guarded as time passes from the onset of the condition. The slow metabolic rate of reptiles means that owners may not recognize early symptoms as urgent, potentially delaying critical treatment.
