The kidneys perform critical functions including waste filtration, water balance regulation, electrolyte homeostasis, and activation of vitamin D3 necessary for calcium metabolism. When kidney function becomes impaired, these essential processes falter, leading to systemic toxicity, metabolic bone disease, and eventually death if untreated. Kidney disease in iguanas is predominantly a captive condition resulting from improper diet and husbandry.
Green iguanas are particularly susceptible to kidney disease due to a combination of their unique physiology and common husbandry mistakes. As strict herbivores, iguanas evolved to process plant proteins efficiently while excreting nitrogenous waste as uric acid. When fed inappropriate high-protein diets containing animal products, the kidneys become overwhelmed with nitrogenous waste, leading to progressive damage. Early detection offers the best opportunity for slowing disease progression and maintaining quality of life. Treatment focuses on reducing kidney workload through dietary modification, maintaining hydration, managing complications including bone disease, and addressing any underlying causes.
