Unlike mammals that excrete nitrogenous waste primarily as urea, iguanas and other reptiles convert metabolic waste products into uric acid and urates, which are normally excreted as a semi-solid paste mixed with feces.
Green iguanas are particularly susceptible to bladder stone formation due to a combination of their physiology, dietary requirements, and the challenges of replicating their natural environment in captivity. In the wild, iguanas consume a diet rich in leafy vegetation with high water content and maintain adequate hydration through both drinking and food consumption.
