In green iguanas, abscesses can occur in various locations but are particularly common in the jaw region (mandibular or maxillary) and in subcutaneous tissues throughout the body. Reptile abscesses differ significantly from those in mammals because the pus is characteristically thick and caseous (cheese-like) rather than liquid, which has important implications for treatment. Green iguanas are among the reptiles most commonly presented to veterinarians with abscesses, reflecting both the popularity of this species and certain factors that predispose them to abscess formation. Jaw abscesses in iguanas often develop secondary to periodontal disease or metabolic bone disease, both of which are unfortunately common in captive green iguanas. Subcutaneous abscesses may result from bite wounds, trauma, or spread from other infection sites. The prevalence of abscesses in captive green iguanas is closely linked to husbandry quality, as many of the predisposing factors relate to nutritional deficiencies and environmental inadequacies.
The impact of abscesses on iguana health depends on their location, size, and the involvement of underlying structures. Subcutaneous abscesses that remain confined to soft tissue may cause local swelling and discomfort but limited systemic effects if addressed promptly. Jaw abscesses, however, frequently involve the bone (osteomyelitis), creating more serious disease that is challenging to treat and carries significant risk of permanent damage. Abscesses that go untreated can rupture, spread to adjacent tissues, or cause systemic infection (septicemia). Large abscesses near vital structures can cause functional impairment, including difficulty eating in the case of jaw involvement.
Abscesses in green iguanas are treatable conditions, but treatment success depends on the extent of infection and the underlying cause. Most abscesses require surgical intervention because the thick, caseous pus cannot drain through small openings. Antibiotic therapy accompanies surgery to address residual infection. Critically, treatment must also address the factors that predisposed to abscess formation, whether nutritional deficiencies, metabolic bone disease, trauma sources, or other husbandry issues.
