When dietary intake is insufficient to meet metabolic needs, deficiency can develop with various health consequences including impaired connective tissue integrity, reduced immune function, and poor wound healing.
The significance of vitamin C deficiency in reptiles has been debated among veterinary professionals, as most reptile species can synthesize ascorbic acid in their kidneys or liver. Certain lizard species may also be vulnerable, particularly those maintained on nutritionally incomplete diets or experiencing chronic stress. The condition develops gradually and may go unrecognized until secondary problems like poor wound healing or increased susceptibility to infection become apparent.
