This condition is particularly prevalent in fish-eating reptiles, as many fish species contain an enzyme called thiaminase that breaks down thiamine during digestion. The deficiency disrupts critical metabolic processes and can lead to severe neurological dysfunction if left untreated.
Thiamine plays an essential role in carbohydrate metabolism and energy production within cells, particularly affecting the nervous system and muscle tissue. Reptiles affected by this deficiency cannot properly convert food into usable energy, leading to a cascade of metabolic problems that manifest primarily as neurological and muscular symptoms. The condition can develop gradually over weeks to months of improper feeding, making early detection challenging for reptile keepers.
Fish-eating species such as garter snakes, ribbon snakes, water snakes, and aquatic turtles face the highest risk of developing hypovitaminosis B1. However, any reptile fed a diet heavy in thiaminase-containing foods or lacking adequate vitamin supplementation may develop this condition. Wild-caught reptiles transitioning to captive diets and those fed primarily frozen fish without proper preparation are especially vulnerable.
When detected early, hypovitaminosis B1 is highly treatable through dietary modification and thiamine supplementation. However, advanced cases with significant neurological damage may have a guarded prognosis. Working with a reptile-experienced veterinarian is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment, as the neurological symptoms can mimic other serious conditions requiring different interventions.
