Unlike mammals, which can sweat or pant efficiently to cool themselves, reptiles rely primarily on behavioral thermoregulation, moving between warmer and cooler areas to maintain optimal body temperature. Understanding the critical importance of thermal gradients, appropriate heating equipment, fail-safe temperature controls, and seasonal adjustments prevents this devastating condition from occurring. When hyperthermia does occur, immediate cooling and emergency veterinary care offer the best chance for survival, though outcomes depend heavily on how quickly the situation is recognized and addressed.
