Geotrichosis is a fungal infection caused by Geotrichum candidum, a yeast-like organism that exists widely in the environment and is considered an opportunistic pathogen in reptiles. This fungus is commonly found in soil, water, air, sewage, and decomposing organic matter, as well as on the surfaces of many fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. In healthy reptiles with competent immune systems, exposure to Geotrichum rarely results in clinical disease. However, when immune defenses are compromised by stress, malnutrition, concurrent illness, or suboptimal environmental conditions, this ubiquitous organism can establish infection and cause significant disease.
Geotrichosis can affect a wide range of reptile species maintained in captivity, though documented cases in the veterinary literature remain relatively uncommon compared to some other fungal pathogens. The condition has been reported in various lizard species, chelonians, and occasionally in snakes, with susceptibility appearing to correlate more strongly with individual immune status and environmental conditions than with specific species predisposition. The true prevalence of Geotrichosis in captive reptiles is likely underestimated due to challenges in diagnosis and the possibility that mild infections resolve without veterinary attention when husbandry conditions improve.
The health impact of Geotrichosis varies considerably depending on the location and extent of infection. Cutaneous infections may remain localized and cause primarily cosmetic concerns with scaling and discoloration, while systemic spread can affect the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal system, and other internal organs with potentially life-threatening consequences. As with most reptile diseases, the ectothermic nature of these animals means that environmental temperature directly influences immune function, disease progression, and response to treatment. Reptiles maintained at suboptimal temperatures face both increased susceptibility to initial infection and reduced ability to clear established disease.
With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, many cases of Geotrichosis can be successfully resolved, particularly when the infection is detected before systemic spread occurs. Treatment success depends heavily on concurrent correction of any husbandry deficiencies that contributed to immune compromise. Early detection presents significant challenges because reptiles instinctively mask signs of illness, and clinical signs of fungal infection may be subtle in early stages. Any reptile showing changes in skin appearance, respiratory function, appetite, or general behavior should be evaluated by a veterinarian experienced in reptile medicine who can perform appropriate diagnostic testing and initiate treatment promptly.
