Egg peritonitis, also known as yolk coelomitis, is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs in female egg-laying reptiles when egg material, particularly yolk, is released into the coelomic cavity rather than passing through the normal reproductive tract. This condition represents one of the most severe reproductive emergencies in reptile medicine and requires immediate veterinary intervention to prevent fatal outcomes. The condition can develop when eggs rupture internally, when follicles fail to ovulate properly and instead release their contents into the body cavity, or as a complication of egg retention and dystocia.
This condition affects virtually all egg-laying reptile species kept in captivity, though it is most commonly diagnosed in popular pet species such as bearded dragons, leopard geckos, chameleons, iguanas, and various turtle and tortoise species. The prevalence is particularly high in captive reptiles due to the challenges of replicating optimal reproductive conditions in captivity. Female reptiles that are housed alone may still develop eggs and face these complications, as many species can produce infertile eggs without the presence of a male.
The impact of egg peritonitis on reptile health is severe and multisystemic. When yolk material enters the coelomic cavity, it triggers an intense inflammatory response. The protein-rich yolk serves as an excellent medium for bacterial growth, and secondary bacterial infections frequently develop, leading to septicemia. The inflammation causes fluid accumulation, organ compression, and systemic illness that can rapidly progress to shock and death. The condition also affects the reptile's ability to thermoregulate effectively, further compromising the immune system's ability to fight infection.
While egg peritonitis is treatable, the prognosis depends heavily on early detection and aggressive intervention by a veterinarian experienced in reptile medicine. Treatment typically involves a combination of medical management and often surgical intervention to remove the contaminated material and address the underlying cause. Without treatment, this condition is almost universally fatal. Even with appropriate care, some cases prove too advanced for successful treatment, emphasizing the critical importance of recognizing early warning signs and seeking immediate veterinary care for any female reptile showing signs of reproductive difficulty.
