Dermatophilosis is a bacterial skin infection in reptiles caused by the actinomycete Dermatophilus congolensis, an unusual gram-positive organism that produces characteristic branching filaments and motile zoospores. While this organism is perhaps better known as a pathogen of mammals, particularly causing rain rot or streptothricosis in horses and cattle, it can also infect reptiles, particularly those species living in humid environments or with compromised skin integrity. The infection produces crusting, scaling lesions on the skin or shell that can progress to deeper tissue involvement if left untreated.
This condition affects various reptile species, with higher prevalence reported in semi-aquatic turtles, crocodilians, and other species inhabiting moist environments or maintained in conditions with elevated humidity. The organism thrives in wet conditions and requires moisture to release its infectious zoospores, which explains the predilection for humid environments and the seasonal variation often observed in outdoor or semi-wild populations. Captive reptiles maintained in inappropriately humid conditions or with persistent skin wetness are at elevated risk.
The impact of dermatophilosis on reptile health ranges from mild, localized skin irritation to more extensive involvement that can compromise the protective function of the integument. The reptilian skin serves crucial functions including protection against pathogens and environmental insults, regulation of water loss, and in many species, thermoregulation through control of peripheral blood flow. Damage to this barrier through bacterial infection can predispose to secondary infections and systemic illness, particularly if the animal's immune function is already compromised by suboptimal husbandry conditions.
Dermatophilosis in reptiles is generally treatable when diagnosed and addressed appropriately, with most cases responding well to a combination of topical therapy, systemic antibiotics when indicated, and correction of environmental conditions promoting infection. Early intervention improves outcomes and reduces the risk of complications.
