Cheilitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the lips and perioral tissues of reptiles, characterized by swelling, redness, crusting, and potential ulceration of the labial scales and surrounding soft tissues. This condition can range from mild localized inflammation to severe, progressive infection that significantly impacts the reptile's ability to eat, drink, and thermoregulate effectively. While cheilitis may initially appear as a minor cosmetic concern, it often indicates underlying husbandry problems or can progress to more serious systemic infections if left untreated.
This condition affects a wide variety of reptile species but is particularly common in lizards that are prone to rostral abrasions from repeated rubbing against enclosure walls, as well as species kept in suboptimal humidity conditions. Bearded dragons, iguanas, monitors, and water dragons are frequently diagnosed with cheilitis, though any reptile species can develop this condition under the right circumstances. The prevalence is notably higher in captive reptiles compared to wild populations, strongly suggesting that husbandry factors play a primary role in disease development.
The impact of cheilitis on reptile health extends beyond the visible inflammation. Because reptiles are ectothermic and rely on behavioral thermoregulation, any condition affecting the mouth can interfere with basking behavior, feeding, and overall metabolic function. Reptiles with painful oral conditions often reduce food intake, leading to weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, and compromised immune function. Additionally, the oral cavity serves as a potential entry point for systemic bacterial infections, making prompt treatment essential to prevent progression to septicemia.
Fortunately, cheilitis is generally treatable when caught early and addressed comprehensively. Treatment success depends heavily on identifying and correcting the underlying cause, whether traumatic, infectious, or environmental. Early intervention by a reptile-experienced veterinarian, combined with appropriate husbandry modifications, typically results in complete resolution. However, advanced cases involving deep tissue infection or bone involvement carry a more guarded prognosis and require aggressive, long-term treatment protocols.
