Stomatitis, commonly known as mouth rot, is a serious bacterial infection of the oral cavity that affects chameleons and other reptiles. This condition involves inflammation and infection of the gums, oral mucosa, tongue, and surrounding soft tissues of the mouth. In chameleons, stomatitis represents one of the more frequently encountered health problems, often developing as a result of immune suppression related to stress or suboptimal husbandry conditions. The condition can range from mild superficial infection to severe, life-threatening disease that spreads beyond the oral cavity.
Chameleons of all species are susceptible to stomatitis, though the condition is particularly prevalent in captive animals experiencing chronic stress or husbandry deficiencies. Veiled chameleons, panther chameleons, and Jackson's chameleons account for most cases seen by reptile veterinarians, primarily due to their popularity as pets rather than any species-specific predisposition. The prevalence of stomatitis in captive chameleons reflects the challenges of meeting these animals' exacting environmental and psychological requirements. Animals that are wild-caught, recently imported, or kept in suboptimal conditions face significantly elevated risk.
The impact of stomatitis on chameleon health extends far beyond the oral cavity itself. Because the mouth is essential for feeding and drinking, affected chameleons often reduce or cease food intake, leading to rapid nutritional decline. The infection can spread to deeper tissues of the head, including the bones of the jaw, creating osteomyelitis that is extremely difficult to treat. Systemic spread of bacteria can lead to septicemia, a bloodstream infection that is frequently fatal. Additionally, the stress of chronic oral pain further suppresses immune function, creating a cycle of worsening disease if intervention does not occur.
With early detection and appropriate treatment, stomatitis in chameleons can be successfully resolved. However, treatment success depends heavily on identifying and correcting the underlying factors that allowed infection to develop. A reptile-experienced veterinarian is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment, as the condition requires more than simple antibiotic therapy. The veterinarian will assess the extent of infection, obtain samples for culture if needed, and develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses both the infection and the predisposing conditions. Early intervention before the infection spreads to bone or becomes systemic dramatically improves prognosis.
