Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by yeast organisms of the genus Candida, most commonly Candida albicans, that affects the gastrointestinal tract and oral cavity of reptiles. This opportunistic infection develops when conditions favor yeast overgrowth, typically in animals with compromised immune systems, those receiving prolonged antibiotic therapy, or reptiles experiencing significant stress. Candida yeasts are normal inhabitants of the digestive tract in many animals, becoming pathogenic only when the balance between host defenses and fungal population shifts in favor of the organism.
Candidiasis can affect virtually all reptile species kept in captivity, though it is most commonly diagnosed in species that are frequently maintained under suboptimal conditions or those with particular susceptibility to gastrointestinal disorders. Bearded dragons, tortoises, iguanas, and various gecko species are among those commonly affected. The condition is particularly associated with husbandry deficiencies that compromise immune function, including improper temperatures, inadequate nutrition, and chronic stress. Young reptiles with developing immune systems may be especially vulnerable.
The health impact of candidiasis ranges from mild oral or gastrointestinal infection to more severe systemic disease in severely immunocompromised animals. Oral candidiasis presents as white plaques or patches in the mouth, while gastrointestinal infection causes digestive disturbances and nutrient malabsorption. In most cases, candidiasis serves as an indicator of underlying problems including immunosuppression, antibiotic disruption of normal flora, or husbandry issues. Addressing these underlying factors is essential for successful treatment and prevention of recurrence.
Candidiasis is generally treatable with appropriate antifungal therapy when underlying causes are identified and corrected. The prognosis for localized infections is typically favorable with proper treatment. However, the presence of candidiasis should prompt careful evaluation of the reptile's overall health status and husbandry conditions, as the infection rarely occurs in healthy, well-maintained animals. A reptile-experienced veterinarian should evaluate affected animals to determine the extent of infection and identify any contributing factors requiring attention.
