Bladder calculi, commonly known as bladder stones, represent a significant health concern in reptiles where mineral deposits accumulate within the urinary bladder to form solid masses. In reptiles, these stones are predominantly composed of uric acid or urate salts, reflecting the unique urinary physiology of these animals. Unlike mammals that excrete nitrogenous waste primarily as urea, most reptiles convert protein waste products into uric acid, which can precipitate and crystallize under certain conditions. When hydration is inadequate or uric acid production exceeds the body's ability to eliminate it, these crystite substances accumulate, eventually forming stones that can range from small granular deposits to large masses occupying much of the bladder.
Bladder calculi affect numerous reptile species but are particularly common in certain groups. Tortoises are among the most frequently affected reptiles, with species like desert tortoises, sulcata tortoises, and Mediterranean tortoises showing high prevalence. Iguanas, especially green iguanas, develop bladder stones with concerning frequency. Other herbivorous reptiles and those from arid environments adapted to conserve water show increased susceptibility. The condition occurs in both wild and captive reptiles, though captive animals face higher risks due to dietary and husbandry factors that differ from natural conditions.
The impact of bladder stones on reptile health ranges from subclinical discomfort to life-threatening urinary obstruction. Small stones may cause chronic low-grade irritation and inflammation of the bladder lining without obvious symptoms. Larger stones create mechanical pressure within the bladder, potentially affecting mobility and causing pain. As stones grow, they can obstruct urine flow either within the bladder or at the bladder outlet, leading to urinary retention, bladder distension, and potential rupture. Secondary bacterial infections of the urinary tract commonly develop around stones. The metabolic derangements associated with urinary obstruction can prove fatal if not promptly addressed.
Treatment for bladder calculi is available and often successful, though it frequently requires surgical intervention for established stones. Medical management may address very small stones or post-surgical prevention, but physical removal through cystotomy surgery is typically necessary for stones large enough to cause clinical signs. Early detection improves outcomes significantlyâsmaller stones are easier to manage, and the absence of secondary complications improves prognosis. Any reptile showing urinary abnormalities, straining behaviors, or unexplained lethargy should receive prompt veterinary evaluation from a reptile-experienced practitioner.
