Aspergillosis is a serious fungal infection caused by Aspergillus species, most commonly Aspergillus fumigatus, that affects the respiratory system of reptiles and can spread to involve other organ systems. This opportunistic infection occurs when fungal spores that are ubiquitous in the environment gain entry to the respiratory tract of an immunocompromised or otherwise susceptible host. In reptiles, aspergillosis typically manifests as granulomatous pneumonia, creating nodular lesions in the lungs that progressively impair respiratory function.
Aspergillosis can affect virtually any reptile species, though it is more commonly diagnosed in certain groups including chameleons, chelonians, and various lizard species. The fungus is not inherently pathogenic in healthy animals with intact immune systems, but becomes dangerous when host defenses are compromised. This makes aspergillosis primarily a disease of captive reptiles, as the stresses and husbandry deficiencies common in captivity create the immune suppression necessary for infection to establish. Wild reptiles with normal immune function rarely develop clinical aspergillosis despite constant environmental exposure to fungal spores.
The impact of aspergillosis on reptile health is profound and often devastating. Unlike bacterial respiratory infections that may respond relatively quickly to appropriate antibiotics, fungal pneumonia progresses insidiously and responds slowly to treatment. The granulomatous nature of the disease means that even when fungal growth is controlled, the inflammatory response leaves lasting damage to lung tissue. By the time clinical signs become apparent, the infection is typically well-established with significant lung involvement, making early detection crucial but challenging.
Treatment of aspergillosis in reptiles is possible but challenging, requiring prolonged antifungal therapy lasting months to potentially a year or more. Prognosis is generally guarded to poor, particularly when diagnosis is delayed or when disseminated disease is present. Success depends on early detection, aggressive treatment, correction of underlying immunosuppressive factors, and owner commitment to extended treatment protocols. Prevention through optimal husbandry and immune support is far preferable to treatment once infection is established.
