Aspergillosis is a fungal infection caused by species of Aspergillus, most commonly Aspergillus fumigatus, that affects reptiles primarily through the respiratory system. This opportunistic fungal pathogen is ubiquitous in the environment, found in soil, decaying organic matter, and commonly in damp or poorly maintained enclosures. While healthy reptiles with robust immune systems can typically resist infection, those with compromised immunity due to stress, malnutrition, or improper husbandry become susceptible to colonization and disease development.
Aspergillosis can affect a wide range of reptile species in captivity, including lizards such as bearded dragons, monitors, and chameleons; chelonians including both aquatic turtles and terrestrial tortoises; and occasionally crocodilians. The condition is particularly associated with environments where excessive moisture, poor ventilation, and organic debris create conditions favorable for Aspergillus growth and spore production. Captive reptiles face higher exposure risks than wild counterparts when enclosure hygiene is neglected.
The health impact of aspergillosis ranges from localized respiratory infection to severe systemic disease affecting multiple organ systems. Initial infection typically begins in the respiratory tract when fungal spores are inhaled, leading to colonization of lung tissue and air sacs in species that possess them. Without intervention, the infection can spread through the bloodstream to other organs including the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. The condition often indicates underlying immunocompromise and husbandry deficiencies that must be addressed for successful treatment.
Treatment of aspergillosis in reptiles is challenging and requires prolonged antifungal therapy, often lasting months. The prognosis depends heavily on how advanced the infection is at diagnosis, as respiratory fungal infections may be well-established before clinical signs become apparent. Early detection improves outcomes, but reptiles characteristically hide signs of illness until disease is advanced. Success requires not only appropriate medical treatment from a reptile-experienced veterinarian but also thorough correction of environmental factors that predisposed the animal to infection.
