Arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis represent related degenerative conditions affecting the arterial blood vessels of reptiles, characterized by progressive thickening, hardening, and loss of elasticity in arterial walls. Arteriosclerosis refers broadly to the stiffening and thickening of arteries, while atherosclerosis specifically involves the accumulation of lipid-rich plaques within the arterial wall. In reptiles, these conditions are increasingly recognized as significant causes of morbidity and mortality, particularly in long-lived captive specimens and those maintained on inappropriate diets.
These vascular conditions can affect any reptile species but are most commonly documented in larger lizards and chelonians maintained in captivity. Monitors, iguanas, tegus, and bearded dragons are among the species most frequently diagnosed with arteriosclerotic changes. The prevalence appears to increase with age, with older reptiles showing more advanced changes on post-mortem examination. Zoo collections and long-term captive animals provide much of the documented case material, though the condition likely occurs in private collections as well but may go undiagnosed without post-mortem examination.
The impact of arteriosclerosis on reptile health develops gradually over months to years as arterial changes progressively compromise blood flow to vital organs. Reduced arterial elasticity increases the workload on the heart, potentially leading to secondary cardiac changes. Narrowing of arterial lumens decreases blood supply to tissues including the heart muscle, kidneys, and other organs. Because reptiles are ectothermic with lower metabolic demands than mammals, they may tolerate moderate vascular compromise without obvious clinical signs. However, as the disease advances, organ dysfunction becomes apparent, and the risk of acute complications including thrombosis and vessel rupture increases substantially.
Early detection of arteriosclerosis in reptiles is challenging but important for implementing management changes that may slow disease progression. Treatment focuses on correcting dietary and husbandry factors that contribute to vascular disease, as there are no medications specifically proven to reverse arterial changes in reptiles. A reptile-experienced veterinarian can assess cardiovascular status through physical examination and imaging, identify contributing factors, and develop a management plan. While existing arterial changes may not be fully reversible, appropriate intervention can improve quality of life and potentially extend lifespan in affected individuals.
