Aeromonas infection represents one of the most significant bacterial diseases affecting reptiles, particularly aquatic and semi-aquatic species. The genus Aeromonas includes several species of gram-negative bacteria that are ubiquitous in freshwater environments and can cause devastating illness in susceptible reptiles. Aeromonas hydrophila is the most commonly implicated species in reptile infections, though A. sobria, A. caviae, and other species may also cause disease. These opportunistic pathogens normally exist in the environment without causing problems but can rapidly cause severe, often fatal infection when reptiles are stressed or immunocompromised.
This infection is most commonly seen in aquatic turtles, semi-aquatic species, and crocodilians due to their constant exposure to water where Aeromonas bacteria thrive. However, terrestrial reptiles can also be affected, particularly when kept in unsanitary conditions with standing water or high humidity that promotes bacterial growth. The bacterium can cause a range of clinical presentations from localized skin infections to overwhelming septicemia depending on the immune status of the host and the route of infection.
The clinical manifestation often referred to as red leg syndrome is characteristic of severe Aeromonas infection, though this presentation can also result from other bacterial pathogens. Affected reptiles develop reddening of the skin, particularly on the ventral surfaces and legs, due to hemorrhage and inflammation in the blood vessels. This dramatic presentation often indicates systemic infection and represents a medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary intervention. Without treatment, affected reptiles typically deteriorate rapidly and have high mortality rates.
Despite its severity, Aeromonas infection is treatable when detected early and addressed aggressively. Success depends on prompt initiation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy, correction of underlying husbandry issues, and comprehensive supportive care. Understanding the environmental nature of this pathogen is crucial, as treatment must address not only the individual animal but also the conditions that allowed infection to occur in the first place.
