Yew toxicity is one of the most dangerous and frequently fatal plant poisonings that can affect rabbits. All parts of the yew tree, including the leaves, bark, seeds, and wood, contain highly toxic alkaloids called taxines that cause rapid and often fatal cardiac failure. The only non-toxic part of the yew plant is the fleshy red aril surrounding the seed, though the seed itself is extremely poisonous if chewed. Yew trees and shrubs are common in gardens, parks, and churchyards throughout temperate regions, making them a significant risk for rabbits with outdoor access. The extreme toxicity of yew cannot be overstated, and even small amounts of plant material can be lethal.
The toxicity of yew stems from taxine alkaloids, primarily taxine B, which have direct cardiotoxic effects. These compounds block sodium and calcium channels in cardiac muscle cells, disrupting the electrical conduction system of the heart and causing fatal arrhythmias. The onset of toxicity is extremely rapid, often within one to three hours of ingestion, and death can occur so quickly that owners may find their rabbit deceased without having observed any symptoms. Unlike many plant toxicities where dose determines severity, even very small amounts of yew can be lethal to rabbits due to the extreme potency of taxine alkaloids and rabbits' small body size.
The impact of yew toxicity on rabbits is typically catastrophic. Affected rabbits may experience sudden collapse, cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory failure, and death within hours of ingestion. The rapid progression of toxicity often leaves little opportunity for intervention. Some rabbits are found dead without any preceding symptoms, having succumbed to acute cardiac failure. Those who do show symptoms may exhibit trembling, weakness, difficulty breathing, collapse, and seizures before death. Secondary gastrointestinal stasis is rarely a concern with yew toxicity because the cardiac effects are so rapidly fatal that GI complications do not have time to develop.
Treatment for yew toxicity is extremely challenging and often unsuccessful due to the rapid onset of fatal cardiac effects and lack of effective antidote. Emergency veterinary care focuses on cardiac stabilization, but the prognosis is grave once significant exposure has occurred. The most effective approach to yew toxicity is absolute prevention through complete elimination of any possible rabbit access to yew plants. Every rabbit owner must be able to identify yew and ensure their rabbit can never contact this plant in any form. The stakes could not be higher, as yew toxicity is frequently fatal even with the most aggressive treatment efforts.
