Immune function becomes impaired, increasing susceptibility to infections. Nervous system damage may occur in prolonged deficiency. Young growing rabbits are particularly vulnerable to severe effects because of their rapidly developing tissues and high metabolic demands.
Vitamin E deficiency is treatable through dietary correction and appropriate supplementation, with most rabbits showing improvement when adequate vitamin E is restored. However, treatment must be initiated before irreversible tissue damage occurs, as severe muscle degeneration or neurological damage may not be fully reversible. Working with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian is essential for proper diagnosis, appropriate treatment planning, and monitoring of response. Early detection and intervention significantly improve outcomes, though rabbits characteristically hide signs of illness, meaning deficiency may progress before owners recognize symptoms.
