The primary causes of vitamin D deficiency in rabbits include inadequate dietary intake and insufficient exposure to ultraviolet B light, which enables the skin to synthesize vitamin D. Indoor rabbits who receive no natural sunlight or appropriate artificial UVB lighting are particularly vulnerable, as they cannot produce vitamin D through skin synthesis and must rely entirely on dietary sources. Rabbits kept outdoors or those with regular access to unfiltered natural sunlight can synthesize vitamin D cutaneously, reducing their dependence on dietary intake. However, even outdoor rabbits may develop deficiency if they spend most of their time in shaded areas or if diet is severely inadequate.
The effects of vitamin D deficiency can be significant, particularly affecting the skeletal system and dental health. Inadequate vitamin D impairs calcium absorption and bone mineralization, potentially leading to weakened bones, increased fracture risk, and dental problems. Young growing rabbits are especially vulnerable because proper bone development requires adequate vitamin D and calcium. Immune function may be compromised, leaving affected rabbits more susceptible to infections. Because rabbits have unique calcium metabolism with intestinal absorption that is somewhat less dependent on vitamin D than in some species, the effects may be less dramatic than in animals where vitamin D is more critical for calcium absorption, but deficiency can still cause significant health problems.
Vitamin D deficiency is treatable through dietary correction, appropriate UVB light exposure, and when necessary, veterinary-supervised supplementation. Most rabbits respond well to improvements in diet and lighting, with gradual improvement in vitamin D status and resolution of symptoms. However, treatment must be carefully managed because excessive vitamin D causes toxicity, which can be more immediately dangerous than deficiency. Working with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian ensures proper diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and avoidance of over-supplementation. Early intervention improves outcomes, though rabbits hide signs of illness, meaning deficiency may be advanced before owners recognize problems.
